Refuse & Recycling
Weekly refuse/recycling collections occur on Mondays (or Tuesday, if Monday is a holiday) and allows for unlimited amounts of recyclables and one wheeled refuse cart per week without a sticker.  Holidays include:
  • New Year’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Fourth of July
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas

Village ordinance prohibits residents from putting garbage, recycling or yard waste out at the curb before 4:30 p.m. on the day before Monday's refuse collection. To ensure refuse is picked up, it must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day (6 a.m. if you are in a construction zone). Carts must be removed from the curb within 24 hours after pickup. If your cart was out by 7 a.m. on the collection day and your pickup is missed or you wish to arrange for a special pickup, please contact the refuse hauler, Groot Industries, at 847-429-7370  before noon the day after scheduled collection.

Refuse and recycling carts come in a variety of sizes.  Refuse carts are available in 35, 65, and 95 gallon. Recycling carts are available in 35 or 65 gallon sizes. Recycling is a FREE service, and the Village encourages residents to recycle as much as possible as the Village receives revenues from the sale of recyclables and passes these revenues back to residents via a monthly recycling credit. Recycling can be comingled within the cart and should be left at your curbside with your regular refuse.
Refuse and recycling carts are the property of the Village of Glen Ellyn and should be left at your house if you move.  The carts assigned to your home must be used as your primary refuse container, however you can request a different cart size should your needs change.  To request a different cart size, please contact the Billing & Customer Service Division at 630-547-5235.  Please note there is a $18.00 delivery fee to change your cart size.  Should your refuse or recycling cart break, please contact the Village at 630-469-5000 to request a new cart.

Unlimited Refuse Collection

The Village of Glen Ellyn’s waste hauler, Groot Industries, will be providing unlimited refuse collection on a bi-annual basis. This special service only applies to residents who live in incorporated Glen Ellyn. The program also excludes multi-family (townhome residents may participate) and commercial buildings. Its purpose is to enable residents to get rid of odds and ends that can’t be recycled. Yard waste is not included in the unlimited refuse day and each bundle or bag must be tagged with a yard waste sticker. In order to keep the cost of this program down, it is critical that no additional refuse is brought from outside the Village limits. If you see this happening, call 9-1-1 immediately and report it to the police. Please follow these guidelines:

    • The unlimited refuse pick-up will take several days, but to ensure that you are not missed, items must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday, April 16. If you miss the waste hauler, they will not return to your street.
    • Separate your usual household garbage (food and perishables), recycling and yard waste from refuse by grouping them on separate parts of the parkway. Groot Industries will collect the normal weekly refuse from all residences on Monday.
    • All materials must be in containers or bundled (max. 50 pounds), with the exception of bulk items, such as couches, chairs, lamps, bicycles, appliances, tires (off the rim), etc. Items such as swing sets or old carpet must be broken into sections and bundled or containerized. (All bundles must be no longer than four feet in length.) Containers include trash bags and cans, cardboard boxes, etc.
    • No loose construction material will be accepted. All construction material must be placed in containers or bundles and tied with rope (max. 50 pounds). For the safety of refuse workers, all nails must be removed or bent over and all glass window panes must be taped with duct or masking tape.
    • Construction material is limited to two cubic yards (about eight 33-gallon-sized cans).
    • Paint is accepted. Please note that there can be no residual liquids, all paint must be dried out and can be done by mixing kitty litter in the paint a few days prior.
    • If you put out refuse and it is removed from containers or unbundled by scavengers, it is your responsibility to put the items back into containers or re-bundle them.
    Items not accepted include:

      • Electronics
      • Concrete, bricks, broken glass and stone not in containers
      • Fencing not in containers
      • Utility sinks or tubs
      • Household hazardous waste
      • Liquids
