An initial discussion about whether Glen Ellyn would allow the sale of recreational cannabis within Village limits was held by the Village Board at the Workshop meeting on Monday, August 19. While no formal action was taken at the Workshop, the Village Board requested staff to provide additional data and research for a continued discussion.
The next steps in this process will include a Public Hearing at a Plan Commission meeting, expected in September or October. Additionally, at the September 9 Village Board meeting, a resolution will be considered clarifying the Village's intent to examine municipal cannabis regulations.
The state of Illinois has approved adult-use recreational cannabis, beginning January 1, 2020. While municipalities cannot outlaw use or possession, they can ban or restrict sales within their borders before the law takes effect.
