Severe Storm Preparedness

To give advance warning that a tornado has been spotted or is heading toward Glen Ellyn, the Village has outdoor severe weather warning sirens positioned strategically throughout the community.  The severe weather sirens are activated by Dupage Public Safety Communications (DuComm) if the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning for DuPage County, or if a storm or tornado poses a threat to Glen Ellyn.  The sirens are tested the first Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m., weather permitting.  DuComm does not test the severe weather sirens if the weather is severe or threatening, as this helps to ensure that there will be no confusion as to whether it is a test or a real alert.

When the sirens are activated, residents will hear a 3-5 minute steady signal of the sirens. Seek shelter in the most interior room of your home or office. You should avoid outside walls and windows. An interior bathroom, closet or other room is generally the safest location. If you have access to a radio or television, tune to a local channel to listen for essential emergency information.

Heavy Storm Preparedness
Most of Glen Ellyn's flooding and drainage problems occur during and after heavy storms. Storms can happen at any time, but especially in spring and summer. Floods can happen fast, so here are some suggestions to prepare:
  • Keep storm sewer inlets and drainage ditches clear of debris, including leaves and grass clippings.
  • Make sure your sump pump is working.
  • Monitor potential flood hazards on local radio, television or on the internet.
  • Copy your most important papers (mortgage papers, deeds, passport, bank and credit card information).  Keep the copies in your home and place the originals outside your home in a secure place like a safety deposit box.
  • Go through your basement, if not your entire house, and take photos of your most valuable possessions (furniture, musical instruments, electronic equipment, etc.).  Save receipts for any expensive household items, such as appliances and electronics, to have proof of their cost.

Heat Wave Preparedness

Residents are encouraged to prepare for hot weather.  Read the Heat Wave Safety Checklist from the American Red Cross to protect yourself.
