The severe weather sirens are activated by DuPage Public Safety Communications (DuComm). The sirens are most commonly used to alert residents of the issuance of a tornado warning by the National Weather Service. Trained severe weather spotters and public officials are responsible for providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather in our area to the National Weather Service.

When the sirens are activated, residents will hear a 3-5 minute steady signal of the sirens. Seek shelter in the most interior room of your home or office. You should avoid outside walls and windows. An interior bathroom, closet, or other room is generally the safest location. If you have access to a radio or television, tune to a local channel to listen for essential emergency information.

The severe weather siren system is tested on the first Tuesday of every month at 10am weather permitting. DuComm does not test the severe weather sirens if the weather is severe or threatening: this helps to ensure that there will be no confusion as to whether it is a test or a real alert.

Smart 9-1-1

The DuPage Emergency Telephone Service Board (ETSB) recently launched Smart 9-1-1 - a new system that enables you to enter safety information online that can be automatically displayed to operators in the event of an emergency.

Why Should I Use Smart911?

Smart911 can help protect you and your loved ones by storing your critical care and emergency rescue information during a calm moment, when you can take the time to ensure that the information entered is correct and accurate.  This information can be key for first responders in communicating with you, understanding any special needs and locating your home.

Supplied information can include children's photos, medical conditions, home addresses of mobile phone callers, disabilities or other rescue-related information.

Participants can register cellular and smart phones, as well as land lines.  Smart911 then automatically delivers this information with any 9-1-1 call to the call taker's work station at participating Public Service Answering Points. To register for this free service, please visit  The information provided remains completely confidential and is only available to emergency responders during a 9-1-1 call.

The DuPage ETSB serves 16 independent 9-1-1 dispatch centers.  These centers, which include DUCOMM, provide police and fire dispatch services for Glen Ellyn and handle over 900,000 9-1-1 calls for service each year.  DuPage ETSB E911 serves a resident population of over 932,541 and has a service delivery area of over 333 square miles.

Child Safety Seat Inspections
The Glen Ellyn Police Department offers residents free child safety seat inspections by appointment.  Child safety seat inspections are critical to ensuring that the Village’s youngest residents are protected when in a motor vehicle.  If you are interested in having your child safety seat inspected, please contact the Police Department at 630-469-1187.

Why are Child Safety Seat Inspections so Important? Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death of children, ages 3 to 14. Many of these deaths can be prevented through the proper use of child safety seats. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), properly installed child safety seats can reduce fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers, ages 1 to 4.
The problem is most parents and caregivers are unaware of the risk to children when they are not properly restrained in child safety seats. According to a recent study, 96 percent of parents and caregivers believe their child safety seats are installed correctly, but NHTSA research shows that seven out of 10 children are improperly restrained, putting them at risk for serious injury or death in a crash.
Test Your 9-1-1 Service
DUCOMM, Glen Ellyn's 9-1-1 emergency dispatching service, recommends that all Glen Ellyn residents periodically test their 9-1-1 service on a Sunday morning, typically DUCOMM's slowest time, to be sure your address displays properly on their equipment.  When you call DUCOMM, tell them that you are conducting a test to be sure that your proper address information is displayed. This is an important step to be sure that emergency responders can reach you in the event that you are unable to relay your location in a crisis.
