In maintaining its commitment to environmental sustainability, the Village of Glen Ellyn has participated in a wide variety of environmental activities and programs over the past few years. These activities and programs include:
Municipal Electric Aggregation
In early 2013, the Village contracted with alternative electric supplier Verde Energy, to supply electricity to all of Glen Ellyn's residential and small business electric customers. Contracting with Verde followed an extensive referendum process and bid process, which demonstrated that Verde provided the lowest, responsible price to Glen Ellyn customers. However, not only did the new contract with Verde provide for lower electricity supply pricing than ComEd, it also provided for 100% green energy through renewable energy credits. These energy credits ensure that 100% of the energy purchased by Village residents and businesses through their usage brings a 1 for 1 credit of green energy electricity supply to the national electrity grid. Annual Recycling Extravganza and Electronics Recycling Collection
The Village of Glen Ellyn, in conjunction with the Glen Ellyn Environmental Commission, hosts an annual Recycling Extravaganza at the end of every April. The Recycling Extravangaza allows residents and interested individuals to bring a wide variety of items to the event to either be reused, or recycled, instead of being thrown out. Many of the items collected include books, clothing, eye glasses, bicycles, fire extinguishers, batteries and cell phones. The 2014 Recycling Extravagnaza will be held on Saturday, April 26 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Duane Lorraine Parking Lot (just west of the Public Library parking lot).
As part of the annual Recycling Extravaganza, the Village provides the opportunity for residents to dispose of unwanted electronics during the event. The disposal of electronics to Illinois landfills is now banned; providing this annual service is a great way for residents to have their electronics responsibly recycled. Items accepted include personal computers, laptops, televisions, printers, radios, telephones and small and large household appliances.
Holiday Light Recycling
On an annual basis, beginning around the end of November and ending around Valentine's Day the following year, the Village plays host to holiday light recycling at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, 535 Duane Street, 1st Floor. Residents have the opportunity to bring their non-working or old holiday lights into the Civic Center for them to be recycled instead of landing in the Illinois landfill.
Cooking Oil Recycling
Beginning in 2013, the Village, in conjunction with S.C.A.R.C.E. and the Glen Ellyn Park District, hosted a one-time cooking oil collection at the Sunset Pool Parking Lot. Residents and interested individuals could bring their used cooking oil to the site on the day of their event to have their cooking oil recycled into biofuel, in lieu of having the oil go down drains and sewers throughout the community.

In addition to this one day collection held at the end of November (after the Thanksgiving holiday when many families are deep frying their turkeys), the Glenbard Wastewater Authority (a joint organization of the Villages of Glen Ellyn and Lombard), began to offer daily cooking oil recycling to residents at their facility located at 21W551 Bemis Road, Glen Ellyn. If you would like to drop off used cooking oil at the Glenbard Wastewater Authority, please call ahead at 630-790-1901.
