On Monday, March 16 at the 7 p.m. Village Board Workshop meeting, the Board is expected to discuss adding an Advisory Referendum Question to the November 3, 2020 Presidential Election ballot. The question, to be considered, would ask residents whether the Village should permit recreational sale of cannabis within Village limits. The Board is expected to discuss specific language of the potential Advisory Referendum Question. The Workshop meeting is open to the public and public comments are welcome. This initial discussion will be informational only and no final decisions will be made at this workshop.
In November 2019, the Village Board voted to impose a moratorium ordinance until the fall of 2020 on accepting or approving applications for recreational cannabis dispensaries in Glen Ellyn. The new state law that went into effect January 1, 2020, makes it legal, subject to important limitations, for adults age 21 and older to possess cannabis for recreational use in Illinois. While municipalities cannot outlaw use or possession, they can ban or restrict sales within their borders.
