[ARCHIVED] Hydrant Flushing to Occur

Hydrant Flushing

Beginning April 11, the Public Works Utility Division will be flushing the Village’s roughly 1,250 hydrants. Crews will be working mainly in the 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. timeframe, with some earlier morning flushing done in certain high traffic areas. Signs will be placed in the general area where flushing is taking place that day. The process is anticipated to be complete by the middle of May.

This year, flushing will be performed Monday through Sunday as Public Works staff has been working staggered schedules due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hydrants are flushed every year to ensure the operability of each fire hydrant along with helping to maintain water quality by cleaning out any particulate matter that may have accumulated in the water lines. During or immediately following the hydrant flushing, water discoloration may occur. If discoloration is noticed, allow the water to set in the main lines for 15-20 minutes to allow the particulates to settle back out and then try running the water again to clear the line, including removing any aerators to clean out any rust or other particulates that may have entered the home.

Please note, all work is weather dependent. Residents can contact the Public Works Department at (630) 469-6756 for more information or to answer any questions.
