At the Monday, June 15 Village Board Workshop, the Board discussed the Village’s Central Business District Streetscape and Utility Project. The project design had been briefly paused due to COVID-19, but has now resumed.
Mock-ups for decorative pavement options will be installed in the downtown by this fall with the opportunity for residents and businesses to provide feedback. Considering the need for additional outdoor dining options, Village staff will review the proposed parking plan, sidewalk width recommendations and other design elements that would impact outdoor dining opportunities.
At Monday’s workshop, staff presented several options for a revised construction schedule to the Village Board, taking into account events and other planned developments in downtown Glen Ellyn. It is likely that start of construction will be moved to 2022 to allow time to assess how COVID-19 will impact the project’s funding sources and to avoid construction during the Frida Kahlo exhibit in 2021. As new information becomes available, the construction schedule will be brought back for discussion at future Board workshops.
Additionally, the Village Board is discussing ways to reduce the project budget including combining the Crescent Boulevard streetscape work with the Metra Station Improvements Project, as well as delaying improvements to three proposed downtown parklets.
