Construction on Phase 1 of the Village of Glen Ellyn’s streetscape project kicked off on Tuesday, March 15. All businesses within the Central Business District have remained open, and public access to Village garages and lots continues to be available.
This phase has focused on the area south of the railroad tracks along Main and Duane streets, with driveways, streets and sidewalks removed to provide access to underground utility work that has been completely replaced, including sanitary sewers, water mains, water service transfers and storm sewers. All of the major underground utility work has been completed, including AT&T and Nicor relocations.
This milestone allows the Village to proceed with reconstructing the roadway and move on to sidewalks and landscaping (brick, seat walls, planters), resulting in more visible updates to the project in coming weeks.
Traffic will remain one way along Duane Street and be diverted to one side of the street as the opposite side is worked on, beginning first with the south side. The first layer of asphalt is expected to be completed by the first week of July.
The Apex construction has also coincided with the project, with soil cells, sidewalk and driveway work occurring along Main Street. The Main Street Parking Garage is now fully open as well.
As work continues on Phase 1 of the project, Phase 2 is also set to begin in coming weeks. We encourage you to follow the project at downtownge.com for weekly updates and more information.
